Caramelizing onions is an easy technique to develop deep, sweet umami flavors to accent any savory dish. The trick to perfectly caramelized onions? Time and a low temperature.

  • 5 onions
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar

    Directions

    1. Slice onions in half then slice into thin strips.
    2. In a large skillet, heat butter over medium heat until melted.
    3. Add onions to the pan and fold over each other to coat all onions in butter. Add salt and cook down for 15-20 minutes.
    4. Reduce heat to low, add balsamic vinegar and sugar and cook an additional 8-10 minutes, until onions are dark and sticky. Serve.
