Description

Venezuelan Arepas are a hearty and decadent bread-like wrap that is made with corn meal. It is similar to a thick tortilla. This recipe makes 12 80-calorie servings in 30 minutes. These flavorful arepas are perfect when filled with your favorite meats and vegetables. They are smaller than a soft taco shell, but are filled in a similar way. Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1/2 package flour (white corn meal)
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 liter water

Directions

  1. Heat the oil on a large skillet (the oil should be 1 centimeter deep in the pan)
  2. Mix the flour and salt in a bowl. Add the liter of water slowly, kneading together until the liquid is absorbed. Add the rest of the water and mix very well, in a span of approximately 5 minutes.
  3. Form the dough into balls about half the size of an orange, and flatten in your hands until it becomes a disc shape approximately 1 centimeter thick.
  4. Fry on medium-high heat in very hot oil, flipping only once until golden, approximately 5 minutes on each side.
  5. Place the fried arepas onto paper towels to absorb the excess oil.
  6. Split each arepa open with a knife to form a pocket and spoon in your choice of filling while still hot.
