    I added 2 tsp fresh garlic to vegetables also added 2 tsp herb de Provence as I didn’t have fresh thyme. leftover ham bone and ham so I used that heavy 2 cups of ham. 2 cups carrots and 10 cups of broth/ water. I made this in morning and let it sit on stove all day. After boiling for 30 mins, reduced heat and added seasoning that came with peas and diced ham. Did not blend.

    Delicious! You can alter in lots of ways, but I made it per the recipe, except with leftover honey baked ham instead of ham hock. Turned out great!

    I am not a very good cook, and I have been trying to learn by using recipes here on yummly. I've never made split pea soup before and I was nervous about making this. I went to get all the ingredients before reading that I had to cook it in a dutch oven. I don't have a dutch oven so I used a regular pot with a lid and I followed the recipe exactly and it turned out perfectly. It was so delicious. My friends were impressed. great job whoever invented this recipe. Thank you.

    tweaked the recipe a little bit. I did not use ham hock, but I boiled ham bones ahead of time with veggie ends i had in my freezer to make a broth. used 8 cups of the broth, and just added pieces of ham that I already had left over. first time making a split pea soup, turned out great! I did need to add some water to it when reheating bc i did simmer longer than recommended to get a thicker soup, but it did not change the flavor. also used an extra 1/2c of split peas and didnt need to put any of the soup in a blender.

    This recipe definitely deserves five stars. I have to be honest, I’ve never even tried Split Pea Soup before today nor have I ever even made it and I’m hooked. I did modify slightly, because I almost always do. Instead of water I used chicken broth, added about a 1/2 tsp each onion and garlic powder and was not shy about salt and pepper. Also, if you own an immersion blender, I’d recommend using it over an actual blender to save yourself time. Don’t skip the ham hawks, I used ham shanks. UPDATE: I just made this again and it was even better. I used 4 cups chicken broth and 4 cups vegetable broth. I still added onion and garlic powder, LOTS of salt and pepper and a good amount of cayenne for a kick then a hard Simmer for a good 15 min so the flavors meld. This time I did put 5 cups of soup in blender and we preferred the consistency better.
