I really enjoyed these traditional fig cookies and will definitely be making them again for friends and family. The filling was rich and indulgent; I mixed it up a bit by cutting the walnuts down to 1 cup and adding a cup of almonds for more flavor and texture. I notice that some reviewers cut out the rum but I think you need the alcohol to aromatically swell the dried fruit to enrich the flavor. I presented these as pinwheels which I think look more fun than the pastry pockets.
