Just four ingredients and 25 minutes are all that's needed to make and bake these simple yet sublime cookies. Puff pastry dough is cut into strips, brushed with beaten egg, and sprinkled with powdered sugar and chopped almonds. Be sure to press lightly so the almonds adhere to the dough. The strips are twisted for the characteristic shape; press each end onto the baking sheet to help hold the shape.

Ingredients

  • pastry dough (Puff)
  • 1 egg
  • chopped almonds
  • powdered sugar

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 200C.
  2. Cut the sheet of puff pastry dough into 2 by 10 centimeter strips, brush the strips with beaten egg, sprinkle with the powdered sugar and the chopped almonds. Press the almonds into the dough lightly.
  3. Grab the strips from the ends and twist them.
  4. Place them on a wax paper lined baking sheet and bake for 8 to 10 minutes.

I let the cookies cool down before adding the powdered sugar. They bake up nice and crispy. I enjoy the added flavor of the almonds.
