Red Cabbage with Chestnuts

  • 1/2 red cabbage
  • 1 onion
  • 20 grams lard (or butter)
  • salt (to taste)
  • ground black pepper (to taste)
  • 2 teaspoons brown sugar (to taste)
  • water
  • 200 grams chestnuts (vacuum-packed)


  1. Wash and cut the cabbage into medium sized pieces.
  2. Mince the onion.
  3. Heat the butter in a large skillet.
  4. Saute the onion for a few minutes and add the red cabbage.
  5. Mix and season with salt, pepper, and sugar.
  6. Cook for a few minutes.
  7. Add a little water just to wet the mixture and cover the pan.
  8. Continue cooking for 30 minutes on low heat. Stir occasionally.
  9. Add the chestnuts and mix gently.
  10. Simmer for ten minutes.
