Portuguese Francesinha Sandwich


Ham, sausage, steak, roast beef, cheese and a fried egg… Oh my yummy goodness! Get out the fork and knife and get ready for a belly-buster sandwich you might not be able to eat with your hands. This northern Portuguese Francesinha Sandwich is not only a mouthful but also a bellyful of savory, thinly sliced meats topped with cheese of your choice, all served with a fried egg on top and smothered in a decadent port wine, tomato and chili sauce. Serve it with French fries for a traditional, hearty meal.


  • 1 beef stock cubes
  • 1 deciliter milk
  • 1 beer
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1 tablespoon margarine
  • 1 cup port wine
  • 1 tablespoon corn starch
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • hot chili (to taste)
  • 2 slices bread
  • ham (to taste)
  • sausages (to taste)

  • 1 fried eggs


  1. Dissolve the cornstarch well with the milk in the food processor bowl. Add the beer, bay leaves, margarine, port wine, cornstarch, tomato paste, and chili. Grind.
  2. In a saucepan, heat the mixture until it boils and thickens a little, always stirring so that it doesn't stick to the bottom.
  3. Make a sandwich with the bread, ham, sausages, roast beef, and cover with cheese.
  4. Place in center of a plate, and sprinkle with the sauce.
  5. Bake in the oven until the cheese melts, and turns golden brown.
  6. Serve with the fries and a fried egg (optional).
