Candied, fried orange and lemon zest are a showstopping garnish for this sweet treat consisting of sugary, pinwheel-style yeast rolls that are coated in sugar and baked in the oven. Whether you plan on having them as a celebratory dessert, enjoy them for breakfast or warm one up to have alognside coffee or tea, they can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days.

Ingredients

  • 2 oranges
  • 1 lemon
  • 200 grams superfine sugar
  • 600 grams flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 250 milliliters milk
  • 30 grams yeast
  • 70 grams sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions

  1. Add the orange and lemon zest to the superfine sugar in a bowl and mix well. Set aside.
  2. Mix the flour, eggs, milk, yeast, sugar, and vanilla in another bowl. Mix until a dough forms and allow to rest for 15 minutes.
  3. Roll out the dough into a sheet of about 1/2-centimeter thick, and then add the sugar mixture.
  4. Use a rolling pin, gently press down the sugar into the dough.
  5. Roll up the dough into a tube and seal by pressing down the edge.
  6. Cut into 2-centimeter thick slices and place on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet.
  7. Deep fry the spirals in hot oil, turning frequently to ensure they are golden brown on both sides.

I made these for the little ones the other day when it was about 90 degrees outside. It was a delicious treat filled with that great strawberry taste. It cooled them down after playing all day and is a great option for any hot day. Will be preparing these again. Another great 4 star recipe.
