Each of these buttery, flaky packets bears a delicoius surprise: a layer of Nutella, which turns wonderfully melted during baking. Before baking, the pastries are brushed with beaten egg, to encourage browning; be careful not to let the egg wash drip over the sides, or it will inhibit rising. A sprinkling of sugar provides extra crunch. These are best served hot, but not too hot: that chocolatey filling can burn the tongue if not careful.

Ingredients

  • 1 puff pastry
  • Nutella
  • sugar
  • 1 egg yolk

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 190 degrees Celsius. Cut the pastry into 8 equal rectangles.
  2. Spread 4 rectangles generously with Nutella, taking care to stay within 1 cm. of the edges.
  3. Cover with the remaining 4 rectangles. Seal the edges using the prongs of a fork.
  4. Brush with beaten egg yolk.
  5. Sprinkle with sugar.
  6. Bake for 20 minutes until golden brown.
