  • 1 teaspoon vegetable oil
  • 2 nopales (sliced into strips)
  • 1/2 onion (peeled and minced, optional)
  • 1/2 tomato (diced, optional)
  • salt
  • ground black pepper


  1. Place a frying pan on the stove at medium heat, add the oil and nopales. Saute until the nopales begin to let out liquid. Mix everything well until the liquid evaporates, about 15 minutes.
  2. Add the tomato and onion and continue stirring until the onion becomes transparent.
  3. Add a pinch of salt and black pepper and serve.

These would be good served with refried beans and melted white cheese on a tostada. They have a really good flavor when the nopales are picked fresh. Just be careful cleaning them, because the points hurt if they get in your hand. You can buy them clean for you which is easier.
