This macaroni and cheese dish features tender and flavorful shrimp for a surprising and delicious twist to the traditional dinner favorite. A simple bechamel sauce is accented with nutmeg for a warming and delicate accent. This is a great dish to enjoy for a family dinner, serve along with some roasted or steamed vegetables for a complete meal. The leftovers are easily warmed up, so you can enjoy them later in the week.

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 250 grams shrimp
  • 50 grams butter
  • 50 grams flour
  • 500 milliliters milk
  • salt
  • ground black pepper
  • nutmeg
  • pasta
  • 250 grams macaroni
  • cheddar cheese

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 160 degrees Celsius.
  2. Add the oil to a skillet on medium heat. Add the shrimp shells in the oil for a few minutes. Remove the shells from the oil.
  3. Add the butter to the oil and mix well.
  4. Add the flour and mix thoroughly, being careful to remove any lumps.
  5. Add the milk and cook for 5 minutes. Season with a pinch of salt, black pepper, and nutmeg to taste. Add the shrimp and saute for 5 minutes.
  6. Cook the pasta in salted boiling water for 8 to 10 minutes until al dente. Drain and mix the pasta with the sauce.
  7. Place the pasta mixture into a baking dish. Top the pasta with grated cheese. Bake for five minutes or until the cheese is fully melted. Serve warm.
