  • 8 ounces lentils (red split, soaked in water if possible)
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 3 cloves garlic (peeled and finely chopped)
  • 1 ginger root (3cm sq lump of, peeled and finely chopped)
  • 1 red chili peppers (deseeded and finely chopped)
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon curry powder (I used Steenburg's)
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt (according to taste)
  • black pepper (a good grinding of)
  • 400 grams coconut milk
  • 1 red pepper (desseeded and roughly chopped)
  • 1 handful kale (washed and roughly chopped.)
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil
  • 1 onions (large, peeled and finely sliced)
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin seed
  • 1/2 teaspoon kalonji (or black mustard seeds)
