Description

Once you have had a taste of a good tortilla, nothing else can compare. With this recipe for Homemade Flour Tortillas in your repertoire, you will never want to buy a store bought tortilla again. You can store the tortillas in the refrigerator or freezer to use whenever you need them for dinner.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 vegetable shortening
  • 2 cups boiling water (quantity may vary)

Directions

  1. In a large bowl, add the flour, salt, and baking powder.
  2. Mix using your hands.
  3. Add the shortening and mix using your hands again.
  4. Slowly add the water and stir using a wooden spoon until the dough is cool enough to knead.
  5. Add the rest of the water and knead until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  6. Divide the dough and shape into balls. Place in a bowl, cover, and let the dough rest for 30 minutes.
  7. Flatten the dough balls into tortillas by hand or using a tortilla maker.
  8. Cook on a skillet over low heat. Turn over to cook on the other side. Use to make quesadillas, gringas, or tacos.
  9. To store, allow them to cool before placing in a bag to refrigerate or freeze.
