Ingredients

  • 5 pita bread (sections)
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 250 grams ground beef
  • 250 grams ground pork
  • 2 tablespoons mint (minced)
  • 1/2 lemon
  • 2 tablespoons onion (minced)
  • 1 garlic clove (peeled and minced)
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 tomato (sliced)
  • lettuce leaves
  • 1/2 red onion (peeled and sliced)
  • 1/2 cup feta cheese (diced)
  • 1 cup plain yogurt
  • 1 tablespoon dijon mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon honey
  • 1/2 cup cucumber (seeded and diced)
  • 1 tablespoon mint (minced)
  • 1 garlic clove (peeled and minced)
  • salt
  • ground black pepper

Directions

  1. Cut each pita so that 1/5 of each one is removed. Mince the slices and marinate in milk for 10 minutes. Strain the bread.
  2. Mix the strained bread, beef, pork, mint, lemon juice, onion, garlic, oregano, and a pinch of salt and pepper in a large bowl. Form the burgers with your hands.
  3. Heat a skillet with cooking spray on medium heat, grill the burgers until they are golden brown on both sides.
  4. Mix the plain yogurt, Dijon mustard, honey, mint, garlic, and a salt and black pepper in a small bowl.
  5. Cut open the pita breads, spread the dressing, and add the lettuce, beef, tomato, red onion, Feta cheese, and serve with more dressing on top.

You simply have to try this recipe. The feta, yogurt and cucumber mixes remind me of the flavor combinations in a Gyro. Since this is Mediterranean, it has the same origins. I love this and I couldn't wait to serve it at my ladies luncheon at church. It was a huge hit and when you taste it you will know why.
