These cookies are thick and shortbread like with a half and half black and white frosting on top. This recipe for German Amerikaner Cookies draws its inspiration from these German treats, but opts for an all chocolate topping with a sprinkling of shredded coconut. Thick and fluffy, sweet and chocolatey, these cookies are a welcome and delicious treat.

Ingredients

  • 75 grams butter
  • 100 grams sugar
  • 4 tablespoons vanilla sugar
  • 3 drops vanilla extract
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 250 grams flour
  • 3 tablespoons baking powder
  • 100 milliliters milk
  • 100 grams chocolate
  • shredded coconut

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 180 Celsius.
  2. Cream the butter with the sugar, vanilla sugar, and vanilla extract. Add the eggs and mix well. Add the flour, baking powder, and milk, beating well.
  3. Using a spoon, place small mounds of batter onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for 20 minutes and remove from oven to cool.
  4. Melt the chocolate and spread over the cookies, sprinkling with the coconut.

Don't just spread the chocolate over the cookies. Instead, after you melt it, pour some of it into a resealable plastic bag. Snip the end off, and then drizzle the chocolate in a zigzag pattern across the cookies. After that, sprinkle with the coconut flakes. Toast the coconut first though. It just tastes better that way.
