Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 4 cups flour (you may need up to 1/4 more)
  • 1 large eggs (beaten)

Directions

  1. 1Preheat oven to 425 and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or oil well.
  2. 2Dissolve yeast in warm water and stir with a spoon until mixed. This will take about 1 minute. Add sugar and salt, stir well.
  3. 3Add flour, 1 cup at a time, mixing fully before adding more. You want enough flour so that its no longer sticky. I always know when the dough is finished when it bounces back slightly when touched.
  4. 4Knead dough on lightly floured surface for about 3 minutes.
  5. 5Shape into a ball and cut into 1/3 cup sections. My kids were helping so I cut the dough into three pieces, one for each of us.
  6. 6Roll dough into an even rope. Cut your rope into 8-10 pieces and form a circle. Cross the ends of the circle over each other to create an X.
  7. 7In a small bowl beat the egg and pour into a shallow bowl. Dip the entire pretzel into the egg and place on a prepared pan.
  8. 8Sprinkle with desired toppings while still wet. We used cinnamon sugar and salt.
  9. 9Bake for 10 minutes and then turn off the oven to broil for no more than 4 minutes.
