Don't let the gelatin scare you away. It helps keep the salad firm. I don't think it's necessary to use, but I did and liked it. I substituted cream of chicken soup instead of cream of mushroom, and relish works just as well as sweet pickles too. Plus, it's less work. Just make sure the cream cheese is sitting at room temperature for awhile. It makes it easier to stir into the mixture. Served this with crackers, and it was a big hit.
