This humble, inexpensive and easy beef stew manages to be luxurious at the same time, thanks to a rich, milky broth that's inflcted with wine, a dash of nutmeg and onions. In order to build layers of flavor, the meat is tossed in flour and browned in oil. The browned bits on the bottom of the pan add depth as the stew simmers, becoming velvety and lush.

Ingredients

  • 300 grams flour
  • 15 grams yeast
  • water
  • 80 grams sugar
  • 30 grams honey
  • 50 grams olive oil
  • 25 grams aniseed
  • salt
  • 1 egg (beaten)

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 160 degrees Celsius.
  2. In a bowl, add a small amount of water to the yeast and flour. Add the sugar, honey, oil, aniseed, and a pinch of salt.
  3. Shape into a dough ball and leave to rise for 4 hours in an oiled bowl in warm place covered with a moist towel.
  4. Divide the dough into portions of 50 to 60 grams and roll into a log shape.
  5. Join up the ends to make a ring and brush with beaten egg.
  6. Place on a greased baking sheet and bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until golden brown.

Anise is a traditional Holiday flavor, and shaping these cookies into rings makes them festive. Since there is no frosting, you really good hang them on a Christmas tree without ruining them.
