Stroscia is a dessert typical of Pietrabruna in Italy's Liguria region, where it showcases a local ingredient: olive oil. A nod to the Ligurian word strosciare ("to break"), the brittle cake must be broken rather than sliced. It's sprinkled with sugar before serving, a final touch that further heightens its appeal.

Ingredients

  • 1 sheet pastry dough
  • 115 grams chocolate baking bar
  • milk
  • granulated sugar
  • ground cinnamon

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 190 degrees Celsius.
  2. Roll out the sheet of dough and cut it into 8 rectangles.
  3. On the short side of each rectangle, place two squares of dark chocolate.
  4. Roll up the dough and place the pouches on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet.
  5. Brush each pouch with the milk and sprinkle with the sugar and cinnamon.
  6. Bake for approximately 25 minutes. Serve warm.

This recipe produced some yummy pastries which were quick and simple to make. The milk adds a crispy finish. I love the versatility of the recipe as well. I can replace the baking chocolate with a fruity filling or a cream and the bread would still be flaky and good.
