Have you ever ordered fried chicken strips or chicken nuggets and wondered if anyone has ever thought about creating a fried sausage nuggets appetizer, or even a main course? Think about how great it would be to dredge smoky cocktail sausages in an egg and flour mixture and then fry them till they’re a crispy-crunchy golden brown…

Tip: Remove one or two Lit’l Smokies from the package to use later for your homemade white country gravy recipe.

Well, we have the perfect recipe for you using bite-sized Hillshire Farm Lit’l Smokies. These chicken fried sausage bites make a delicious side dish, appetizer, or even the main course for your family dinner.

And don’t forget to serve with a ramekin of creamy, white gravy for dipping. Traditional white gravy — also known as country gravy — is typically made with drippings leftover from frying or sauteing sausage links. Since the Lit’l Smokies in this recipe are battered before frying, there are no sausage drippings left behind in the pan to incorporate into your gravy. However, you can make the gravy in the pan with leftover cooking oil you used to make your fried sausage bits. It might not contain a lot of sausage drippings, but it will have enough to give your gravy a subtle smoky flavor.

Combine and whisk whole milk and flour in the pan you used to fry the sausage bites and then let the gravy to thicken over a low flame, while continuously stirring. Season to taste with salt and pepper. If you want more of that smoky-meaty flavor in your gravy, chop the one or two Lit’l Smokies sausages you removed earlier from the package and place the chopped pieces in the leftover oil for two or three minutes before adding milk and flour. You don’t even have to use the same Lit’l Smokies sausage in your homemade gravy. Consider using a different Hillshire Farm cocktail links flavor, like Cheddar and Jalapeno Lit’l Smokies Smoked Sausage.
