Caramel apples are a favorite fall treat—and a great way to use up a bounty of fruit from a U-pick orchard. The super-simple sauce is made by melting sugar until caramelized, with no other ingredients added. Use wooden skewers (or clean twigs) to dip the apples in the caramel, then roll them in chopped nuts or dried fruit, or sesame seeds, as desired. Allow them to set on a parchment-lined baking sheet before serving.

Ingredients

  • 4 tart apples
  • 300 grams granulated sugar
  • dried fruit (to coat apples or sesame seeds)

Directions

  1. Wash and dry the apples.
  2. Heat the sugar in a saucepan until you have a nice amber-coloured caramel.
  3. Prick each apple with a skewer.
  4. One by one, dip them in the caramel and right after in the dried fruits or seeds to coat them.
  5. Place them on a baking sheet covered with parchment paper.
  6. Let them harden in open air.
  7. For decoration I cut four small branches that I planted in the apples.

I always use the store bought kits for caramel apples, but I won't be doing that anymore. Once you have tried this recipe, you won't be using any store kit. These are by far some of the best caramel apples I have ever eaten.
