Bread Cake


For a sweet treat that feels fancy but takes little effort at all, make these chocolate-filled puff pastries in a flash. Simply unroll thawed puff pastry dough and cut it into eight rectangles. Place two dark chocolate squares at the short end of each one, and roll them up to form parcels. Brush them with milk and sprinkle sugar and cinnamon on top before transferring them to a hot oven to bake.


  • 500 grams bread (stale, diced)
  • 1 liter milk (heated)
  • 150 grams sugar
  • 5 ounces schnapps
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 lemon
  • candied fruit
  • salt
  • butter


  1. Preheat the oven to 170 degrees Celsius.
  2. Place the bread and soak in hot milk for 4 hours.
  3. Mash the bread with a fork. Add the sugar, schnapps, eggs, lemon zest, candied fruit, and a pinch of salt. Mix until smooth.
  4. Pour the mixture into a greased and floured deep-sided round baking pan. Level the surface of the mixture and top with curls of butter.
  5. Bake for 1 hour. Once cooled, sprinkle with powdered sugar.
