Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 kilogram lean minced beef
  • 2 onions (chopped)
  • 500 grams cabbage (shredded)
  • 400 grams tomatoes (skinned and roughly chopped)
  • 1 tablespoon plain flour
  • 200 milliliters vegetable stock
  • 100 milliliters worcestershire sauce
  • 250 grams self-raising flour
  • 100 grams butter
  • 125 grams cheddar cheese (grated)
  • 125 milliliters milk
  • 1 tablespoon chopped parsley

Directions

  1. Heat the oil in a saucepan and add the ground beef. Cook stirring for 5 mins to brown. Add the onions and cook for 5 more mins. Stir in the cabbage and tomatoes and sprinkle in the all-purpose flour. Cook, stirring, for 3 mins. Add the stock and Worcestershire sauce and cook for 5 more mins until thickened. Season to taste and transfer to a shallow ovenproof dish.
  2. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Put the self-rising flour in a bowl and add the butter, rubbing together with your fingertips until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Stir in 3/4 of the cheese and the milk and stir until smooth.
  3. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and roll out to 2/3 inch thickness. Cut out small circles using a 2 inch cookie cutter and arrange around the edges of the ovenproof dish, on top of the beef. Sprinkle the remaining cheese on top and bake for 30-40 mins until golden. Sprinkle with chopped parsley to serve .
