10 Perfect Hand Pies for Pi Day
If you love numbers and pastries, Pi Day may be the best day of the year. On March 14th (3.14 - get it?), this numerical holiday is celebrated, of course, with pie. To help make it special, we rounded up 10 of our favorite hand pie recipes.
Happy Pi Day! Every year on March 14th (3.14), we celebrate the most well-known mathematical constant in the world: Pi. In case you need a refresher, Pi (the Greek letter: π) is the constant number always found when you divide the circumference of a circle with its diameter. Math aside, it's also a homophone for pie, a delicious, conveniently circular dessert, which is why we're celebrating it today with the scaled down version of the edible pi(e).
Tips For Making Hand Pies
We can probably all agree that hand pies are adorable, but because you're basically making individual pies, they do require a bit of effort (they're totally worth it, BTW). To make it a bit easier on you, here are a few tips that take out some of the friction:
Make your pie dough from scratch: It's tempting to buy pre-made dough from the grocery store, but you have more flexibility as far as shapes and sizes of your hand pies when you make the dough from scratch. There are only four ingredients (all-purpose flour, unsalted butter, cold water, and salt) and it comes together quickly and nicely in a food processor.
Use a cookie cutter: Half the fun of hand pies is their appearance. To make sure your hand pies come out perfectly, use a biscuit cutter to make round dough circles, or if you want to make different shapes like hearts, use a large cookie cutter.
Don't forget to vent: Make sure to pierce the top of each hand pie with a knife to create a vent. When pie filling cooks, it creates steam inside the pockets of dough which needs to be released or you'll have a small explosion of pie filling on your baking sheet.
Use parchment paper: Just in case of the aforementioned explosion, you should line your baking sheet with parchment paper. This will help with clean up as well as preventing your hand pies from sticking to the baking sheet.
Use egg wash: The recipe you use may not call for an egg wash, but the glossy sheen it creates is the difference between an edible hand pie and a pretty hand pie. To make an egg wash, beat one egg with a tablespoon of water. Then just before baking, brush your hand pies with the egg mixture. If you don't have a pastry brush, you can use your fingers.
