The “pumpkin pie spice” blend is seen in hundreds of fall recipes from fall lattes to the titular pumpkin pie, but what is it exactly? It’s actually a combination of 5 fairly common spices (such as cinnamon and nutmeg) that you may already own! Don’t spend another $5 bucks on pre-mixed spice blends at the store and make your own instead.

Pumpkin Pie Spice
- 4 tbsp ground cinnamon
- 3 tsp ground ginger
- 3 tsp ground nutmeg
- 2 tsp ground allspice
- 2 tsp ground cloves
All you need to do is combine all ingredients in an air tight container and mix well! Store it with your other spices.
Tips and Tricks
- The bulk of the flavor comes from the cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg. In a pinch, you can leave out the allspice or cloves, but you may want to add a teaspoon or so more of ground cinnamon and nutmeg to make up for it.
- Spices lose their potency over time. After 6 months, most spices will become stale and lose a good deal of their flavor. For maximum flavor, it’s a good idea to re-fresh your spices every now and again.
