How would you describe your culinary style?
Memorable! On Sis. Boom. [blog!] I’ll go wherever my memory and somewhat ‘snarky’ sense of humor want to take me. Writing the blog brought me to discover that relating personal memories and funny observations to foods we cook is just adding more flavors for us to to enjoy. I love it when even the simplest of recipes provoke strong memories and compel me to the kitchen to cook them again and again.
Where it gets weird is when foods I’ve never had before stir up memories of things that never happened….
What is the main source of inspiration for your recipes?
Well, my questionable memory of course! In addition to my mom, I have to give a lot of credit for inspiration to the wonderful bloggers that I’ve met since starting this thing. I also tend to go through periodic food obsessions that demand to be worked out online. Presently I’m all about serious ice creams!
If you could have one food while stranded on a desert island, what would it be?
Anyone who says anything other than “ice cream” to this question just isn’t thinking it through!
For someone new to your blog, which recipe do you recommend they try first?
It doesn’t matter. One bite and you’ll be hooked! But do check out my post on A Real Man’s Lemon Bars. You will never think of lemon bars in quite the same way again. I also think everybody should read my post for Dorie Greenspan’s “Gerard’s Mustard Tart.” The memories inspired by this recipe actually won an award at the county fair this summer! (Who knew county fairs had blog awards?) The tart is special and if you don’t have any memories to associate with it yet you can always borrow mine.
What is your ultimate guilty food pleasure?
I don’t understand? Why would anyone feel guilty about food?
Define Yummly.
Yummly is that stack of cookbooks given to you by friends whom you trust to know what you like. They sit there by your bedside reading table calling out to you while you are relaxing and looking for inspiration. These books are magic — every page you turn to is a recipe you just KNOW you are going to love. How do they do that? They call out “YUMMLY!….”
